In the last article Lead Generation Buffet for Every Appetite! I covered paid advertising. Now, let’s have a look at “free” lead generation methods.
First, there is no such thing as free advertising. With paid advertising, you pay with money. With free advertising, you pay with time. Paid advertising can be very effective, and “free” advertising can also reap great rewards if you have the time to invest and are patient.
1) Social Media Lead Generation-Including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google +, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tumblr etc.
Social media is definitely on most business owner’s radar, especially with the incredible number of people who are on social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites. While social media can be a time consuming lead generation technique, it can also help you connect on a deeper level with potential customers. Think of these social media platforms as different virtual phonebooks that you can search by your services or keywords to find people who are already talking about your products or services. Social Media is an incredible way to generate leads organically.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is ensuring your website is ranked higher to the top in a list of online searches. It can help leads (potential customers) discover your business and gives you a chance to organically attract them to your offer. One of the unique benefits of SEO as a lead generation technique is that it can bring you more qualified leads when implemented correctly.

SEO keyword research allows you to target keywords and phrases that your potential customers are using to search for your offer. This is very powerful! The tricky part is applying those keywords to your website and internet marketing strategy so that they actually bring you customers.
3) Link Building
Link building can be very effective for lead generation. Link building has evolved over the past couple years, and now more than ever it is extremely important that it is a part of your lead generation strategy. Why is link building so important for lead generation? Google has decided that link building is one of the most heavily weighted metrics they use to measure a website’s credibility. If links are not going to a website page, then Google assumes the content on that page isn’t credible or valued, and then the page will not be listed highly on search results.
4) Google Hangouts and Free Webinars
Google Hangouts and Free Webinars are powerful tools that can help you generate leads or create additional streams of income. They are a great resource to connect, engage, launch products, and provide value. They are easy to set up and recordings have many uses beyond the live event. Even if people are unable to attend live, you can record your webinar and allow people to watch the webinar later, or download the audio, as long as they register at your site, again sharing their contact information. And also giving you the opportunity to meet face to face and allow potential leads to find out more about your offer.
They allow you to quickly generate leads and build your “list” of prospects and customers. Your list may become the most valuable business asset you own. You will be able to attract many people who are willing to share their contact information so that they can receive valuable information and/or bonuses.
5) Article Marketing
Article marketing is another “free” source of lead generation. It is the practice of posting keyword-focused articles on article sites that have a significant readership following and syndicate your content. Article marketing allows your business to be seen as a trusted resource of knowledge in its area of specialization.
As the Internet has become more social, blogs have gained in popularity. Today, there are over 100 million blogs with more entering the blogosphere every day. Blogs are a great way to increase your presence and make your business more visible via search engines. They can also be helpful when it comes to lead generation, especially if you know how to promote your blog posts. Blogs provide search engines with fresh new content that relates to your industry. Each blog paints a clearer picture of what your business is about not only for Google but also for your customers. A great start to blogging for lead generation is by writing blogs that answer specific questions you are commonly asked about your business.
You can draw very targeted people to a blog via search engines if you do a combination of simple things.
- You need to write regularly because content freshness improves performance.
- SEO with blogs is fairly easy with some special plugins, using tagging and knowing what keywords you are targeting.
- Clear call to action –Make sure you have an effective and focused call to action (offer) to encourage more visitors to take action.
- Linking is also critical, but linking to blogs is often easier and more natural than linking to traditional websites that never change.
7) Local Listings-Craigslist
Founded in 1996 by Craig Newmark, Craigslist.org gets an estimated 10 million unique visitors per day. With an online classified ads format organized by either region or city, Craigslist is one of the highest trafficked websites in the world and it’s full of people looking for opportunity.
They have received their fair share of negative publicity, but it continues to grow and offer so many different marketing opportunities. You can get in on the action by harnessing the marketing power of Craigslist.
Creating leads with Craigslist is free and you do not need a website to post ads. However, it takes time and learning how to do it correctly to achieve profitable results.
There are other “free” advertising methods, but these are the most popular to get you started.
